When planning for a holiday, you may need to include accommodation for your animals. In some instances it may be best  for your pets to stay home. This can be best achieved by arranging for a friend, relative or in house sitter to live in during the period you are away.

More commonly people use boarding catteries or kennels. Many dogs spend their ‘holidays’ very happy in kennels and look forward to going! Things you need to remember when putting your pet into a kennel or cattery include

  • Plan the visit well ahead
  • Do some research. All boarding kennels and catteries today have to be licensed by the local authority, but standards do vary.
  •  Visit the kennel or cattery beforehand to satisfy yourself that the accommodation is up to your expectations.
  • It may be worthwhile obtaining recommendations from friends, family and neighbours.
  • Make sure your pet is up to date with all vaccinations, worming and veterinary health checks.
  • Is your pet on any medications? Ensure you have seen your veterinarian and have enough medications for the holiday period.
  • Cats must have an F3 vaccination and dogs a C5 vaccination within 12 months of visiting the kennel.
